Services at the Vancouver Learning Centre
At the Vancouver Learning Centre we offer a variety of services to meet the individual needs of our students.
Learning Support – Teaching and Therapy
This program provides two to six hours per week of one-to-one teaching by trained faculty on individualized, targeted programs. The student is assigned a team captain who orchestrates a team of teachers which best fit that student. The program is then delivered in upbeat and creative ways to complement that student’s personality and learning style. Programs are closely monitored and changes are made as students progress in their programs. The one-on-one teaching method is an extremely effective way for students to learn.
BOOST (Buying Out Of School Temporarily)
BOOST is a full service program that includes 10 hours of one-to-one intensive teaching, coaching and mentoring on a specifically designed and targeted curriculum each week along with 15 hours of supervised on-site practice. In addition, regular monitoring, progress reviews, counseling, goal setting and crisis intervention are included as needed. The BOOST student becomes part of the VLC family and each BOOST student is assigned a team captain. This program is designed to lead to the achievement of educational goals and to the development of new skill platforms based on a competent and solid set of learned skills. This program often incorporates the earning of academic credentials from the Vancouver Learning Network (VLN) and/or Thompson River University (TRU). Where this is the case, intensive coaching of the curriculum under study is incorporated and the whole program is integrated so that credentials are earned based on solid skills. This rich, self-paced experience changes educational futures.
“The BOOST program is particularly appropriate for young adult students who want to ‘fast track’ a successful return to training or studies at a secondary or post-secondary institution.”
Rehabilitation of Brain Function
When a person has experienced a brain trauma or injury due to accident, illness or stroke, he or she needs a full service response from a team of caring, qualified professional who look to recreate ‘personal best’ outcomes based on both natural abilities and the effects of the trauma. Every situation is personalized.
Character Education at the VLC
Developing the ability to make good decisions and apply reason to given situations is the basis for strong character development. “Character Education” is an innovative and extremely practical program at the VLC that addresses character issues with the primary goal to develop students’ character and value system and talk about the key steps when making character decisions. Six traits of good character are explored in six one-hour sessions. Individual and small group sessions are offered. Character traits that are explored include:
- trustworthiness and how to be trustworthy
- respect and how to be respectful
- responsibility and how to be responsible
- fairness and how to be a fair person
- caring and how to be a caring person
- citizenship and how to be a good citizen.
Typical classes incorporate discussion, mind mapping and exploration of the characteristic, situational examples where developing this characteristic could transpire, and tools to further utilize this trait. Students feel challenged, motivated, and inspired by these classes.
